For Kids LikeVincente

At their 22-week ultrasound, Vincente's parents discovered he had an undiagnosed skeletal dysplasia, showing signs of shortened and bowed long bones, despite the presence of any family genetic abnormalities. They spent five weeks waiting, worried about the diagnoses, unsure if their son would survive the pregnancy. Doctors eventually confirmed that Vincente had the gene for Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) type V, or brittle bone disease. He arrived early at 36 weeks, with three healing fractures sustained in utero, and spent a week in the NICU at CoxHealth, where his breathing and pain control was monitored. Now 11-months-old, he is thriving! Vincente has suffered five fractures, has had hernia repair surgery, port placement and receives a pamidronate infusion every eight weeks to increase bone density, as well as participates in water and physical therapy. He is a candidate for future rodding surgeries, which may allow him be to bear weight on his legs. His parents aren't sure what the future holds, but Vicente is a happy, goodnatured, smiley little boy, who being read to, bath time, music, and water therapy. The family says that Children's Miracle Network Hospitals has already made a big impact on their lives!
